Assessment of and for Learning

The purpose of the Assessment of and for Learning Professional Practice Standard is to make certain that every teacher correctly utilizes various assessments to not only measure, but also guide the student’s learning. Assessments should never be used to simply collect a grade and show what the students know. Effective teaching entails periodically evaluating the students’ progress and analyzing the data to inform further instruction. Although there are various means of demonstrating this standard, three of the most important ways are; using assessment tools for both formative and summative purposes to inform, guide, and adjust student’s learning, utilizing a variety of assessment strategies and instruments that are valid and appropriate for the content and student population, and giving constructive and frequent feedback to students on their learning.
